Cage’s most famous (and also most notorious) work of art is his musical composition 4’33’’. It was written in 1952 -- long before Cage’s exposure to Thoreau’s texts.
 
I chose to include it here simply because it is the one composition of Cage most people have heard of but have never seen a performance of.
 
In 2004 the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Lawrence Foster performed 4’33’’. You can watch the original broadcast by starting the video streaming above (Warning: large file!).
